Emergency Orthodontics in Johnson County

Common Orthodontic Emergencies and At-Home Solutions

There are a handful of minor issues that can happen during braces or clear aligner treatment. Most of these problems can be safely handled at home until we can get you into the office to keep your treatment on track.

Here are some of the most common orthodontic concerns and what you can do in the moment to feel more comfortable:

  1. Loose or Poking Wires

If a wire is poking the inside of your cheek or gums, try using the orthodontic wax we provided on your first day with braces. Place a small piece of wax over the sharp or rough spot. If the wire is loose and you feel comfortable doing so, you can use clean tweezers or a clean eraser end of a pencil to gently tuck it back into place. Avoid trimming wires yourself. If you’re unsure about what to do, text or call us and we’ll guide you through the next steps.

  2. Broken Brackets

If a bracket has come loose from the tooth but is still attached to the wire, don’t worry, as it’s usually not urgent. In the meantime, use orthodontic wax to cover the bracket, especially if it is causing irritation. Be sure to avoid any sticky or crunchy foods until we can see you, and give us a call so we can schedule a quick repair. If your bracket has come completely off, save the bracket in a small bag and bring it to your next appointment.

  3. Lost or Damaged Appliances

Retainers and aligners can be lost, thrown away, or cracked. If you lose or damage your appliance, give us a call or text right away. In the meantime, if you still have your previous aligner, wear that to help prevent teeth from shifting. Do not try to fix a damaged appliance on your own, because you could further damage it. We’ll work with you to get a replacement as soon as possible.

  4. General Soreness or Discomfort

A little tenderness is normal, especially after getting braces or following an adjustment. Over-the-counter acetaminophen (Tylenol) is your best option for relief, as other pain relievers can slow down tooth movement. Cold foods like smoothies or ice cream can also help soothe sore gums and teeth. If your pain feels sharp, is persistent, or seems unusual, reach out and we’ll be happy to take a look.
